Montessori FAQ for Parents
Choosing a daycare or preschool is a big decision. Here are answers to the questions parents ask us most about Montessori education and about Golden Minds Montessori School in Newmarket, Ontario.
What is Montessori education?
Montessori is a child-centred approach to early learning developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. Children choose hands-on activities in a prepared classroom, guided by trained teachers, and learn at their own pace. Read more about the Montessori method and its principles.
What age can my child start at Golden Minds Montessori?
We welcome children from 11 months to 6 years in our Infant, Toddler and CASA programs.
What is the CASA program?
CASA comes from Casa dei Bambini, Italian for "Children's House", the name of Dr. Montessori's first school. It is the Montessori preschool and kindergarten-age classroom, where children work across practical life, sensorial, language, mathematics and cultural studies.
Is Montessori only for certain kinds of children?
No. Because each child learns at their own pace with individual guidance, Montessori works well for children with many different personalities and learning styles. Visiting the classroom is the best way to see whether it feels right for your family.
Isn't Montessori just free play?
Not quite. Children have freedom to choose their work, but within clear limits and a carefully prepared environment. Every material has a learning purpose, and teachers observe and guide each child closely.
How do Montessori teachers work with children?
Montessori teachers observe each child, give individual and small-group lessons, and prepare the classroom so children can work independently. They act as guides rather than lecturing the whole group at once.
What does my child do all day?
A typical day includes arrival, a long morning work cycle, snack, circle time, outdoor play, lunch, rest and afternoon activities. See a day at Golden Minds for details.
Do you support toilet learning?
Yes. Toilet learning is treated as part of practical life and independence in our toddler program. Please contact us to discuss your child's needs and the requirements for each program.
Will my child be ready for school after Montessori?
Montessori builds independence, concentration, early literacy and numeracy, and social skills such as cooperation and courtesy, all of which help children transition confidently to kindergarten and beyond.
Is Golden Minds Montessori part of the CWELCC program?
Yes. We are enrolled in the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) program, and our fees have been reduced by 52.75% for eligible families.
What are your hours and where are you located?
We are open Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at 355 Davis Dr, Newmarket, Ontario L3Y 2N6.
