A Day at Golden Minds Montessori
Families often ask us what actually happens while their child is at school. Every Montessori day at Golden Minds balances calm, focused learning with play, movement, meals and rest. The routine is adjusted for each age group and each child, but here is what a typical day looks like at our Newmarket Montessori school, open Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Morning arrival and greeting
Children are welcomed personally by their teachers. Toddler and CASA children practise independence from the first minute: hanging up coats, changing shoes and putting belongings away. A warm, predictable arrival helps children feel secure and ready to learn.
The Montessori work cycle
The heart of the Montessori day is the morning work cycle: a long, uninterrupted block of time in which children choose purposeful activities from the prepared environment. During this time a child might:
pour, sort, scrub or help prepare snack in the Practical Life area
explore colour, size, texture and sound with Sensorial materials
trace sandpaper letters and build vocabulary in Language
count with number rods and beads in Mathematics
discover maps, plants, animals, art and music in Cultural studies
Teachers observe closely and give individual or small-group lessons, introducing new materials when each child is ready. Children can repeat an activity as often as they like, which is how concentration and mastery grow.
Snack and grace and courtesy
Snack is a calm, social time. Children wash their hands, serve themselves, use please and thank you, and clean up afterwards. These everyday moments teach independence, good manners and care for others.
Circle time
Children gather for songs, stories, conversation, movement and short group lessons on topics such as the seasons, the calendar, nature or celebrations from around the world. Circle time builds listening, language and a sense of community.
Outdoor play
Fresh air and movement are part of every day. Outdoor time supports gross-motor development, nature exploration and social play, and gives children the chance to run, climb, dig and discover.
Lunch
Lunch is another opportunity for practical life skills: setting the table, serving, eating together and tidying up. Older children help younger ones, just as they do in the classroom.
Rest and quiet time
After lunch, children who need it nap or rest in a calm, quiet space. Older children who no longer nap enjoy quiet activities such as books, puzzles and individual work.
Afternoon activities
The afternoon brings a second, shorter work period along with art, music, stories, more outdoor time and practical life activities. The pace is gentle so children finish the day happy and relaxed.
Pick-up and staying connected
At the end of the day, teachers are happy to share how your child's day went. Families can also log in to their Procare account from our homepage.
How the day differs by age
Infants: the day follows each baby's own rhythm for feeding, sleeping and play, with plenty of floor time to move and explore safely, close to caring educators.
Toddlers: short, simple activities, lots of language, toilet-learning support and practical life work such as dressing, pouring and tidying.
CASA (Children's House): a longer work cycle with the full Montessori curriculum, more group lessons and growing independence that prepares children for kindergarten and beyond.
